Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Monday that Israel has been providing aid to Syrian rebels, thus keeping the Druze in Syria out of immediate danger. Israeli officials have previously balked at confirming on the record that the country has been helping forces that are fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad.

After a dozen years of drone attacks, the Taliban is again rampant in Afghanistan and al-Qaida is thriving in Yemen. Britain’s drone attack also made a mockery of the decision by parliament in August 2013 to oppose military action in Syria – in that case targeted at the Damascus government rather than at the rebels fighting it.

But then, British pilots have also been taking part in US bombing raids on Syria. So evidently the democratic niceties didn’t count for a lot. Nor do the legal ones, since there is no legitimate basis for attacks on Syrian territory without authorisation from Damascus or the (nonexistent) threat of imminent attack.

As we know from Iraq and Afghanistan, the alternative of western troops would lead to a full-scale anti-occupation war. After one disastrous western military intervention in the Arab and Muslim world after another, it’s mind-boggling that demands for yet more bombing keep on coming. You only have to consider the failed-state maelstrom that is post-Nato intervention Libya – the other main transit route for refugees into Europe – to see what it means in practice.

The only way to wind down the conflict is through a negotiated settlement involving all the regional powers. Syria has long been a proxy war, pitting the Assad regime’s Russian and Iranian backers against the Gulf dictatorships, Turkey and the western powers that stand behind the myriad rebel groups.

The United States spent a whole year bombing the desert instead of hitting terrorist targets in Syria, the head of the Russian parliament’s international affairs committee wrote on Friday.

In an interview with France’s Europe 1 Radio - Pushkov said that the Russian aerial campaign in Syria would take three to four months.

“The US-led coalition spent a whole year pretending they were striking ISIL targets but where are the results of these strikes?” Pushkov wondered.

Max Boot, a neocon ideologue at the Council on Foreign Relations, admits the U.S. bombing campaign against ISIS is primarily smoke and mirrors.

Earlier this week the Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam said there “is clearly no seriousness” to the war against ISIS. He added the objective is not eliminating the Islamic State but rather an effort by the West to “force their presence” in the region and worsen the situation there.

“From the very outset, this air campaign has NOT been directed against ISIS,” writes Michel Chossudovsky. “The evidence confirms that the Islamic State is not the target. Quite the opposite.”

“The air raids are intended to destroy the economic infrastructure of Iraq and Syria.”

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov says the ISIL terrorist group's leader, Ibrahim Samarrai who is known by the alias Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, works for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and is financially supported by western secret services.
"Baghdadi should take off his mask and declare loudly and clearly that he is a CIA agent, that he has been recruited,” Kadyrov said on Tuesday, adding, “They (the ISIL militants) are Shaitans (devils) and their sole obsession is to grab as much money as they can lay hands on. They are acting on orders from the West and deliberately exterminating Muslims.”

CNN) - Iraq's military claims its air force struck a convoy in western Anbar province that included ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The fate of al-Baghdadi is unknown, as he was "carried away in a vehicle," the military statement said.

"The Iraqi airforce carried out a heroic operation by striking al-Baghdadi's convoy while he on his way to attend a meeting with senior ISIS leaders in Karabelah," the statement said.

The site of the meeting was also struck and several ISIS leaders were killed and wounded, the statement said.

As the titular head of the Islamic State in Iraq, an organization publicly backed by Al Qaeda, Baghdadi issued a steady stream of incendiary pronouncements. Despite claims by Iraqi officials that he had been killed in May, Baghdadi appeared to have persevered unscathed.

On Wednesday, a senior American military spokesman provided a new explanation for Baghdadi's ability to escape attack: He never existed.

Brigadier General Kevin Bergner, the chief American military spokesman, said the elusive Baghdadi was actually a fictional character whose audio-taped declarations were provided by an elderly actor named Abu Adullah al-Naima.

The ruse, Bergner said, was devised by Abu Ayub al-Masri, the Egyptian-born leader of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, who was trying to mask the dominant role that foreigners play in that insurgent organization.

Co-pilot of crashed Russian plane had technical concerns



MOSCOW: -- As aviation experts try to piece together the last minutes of a Russian airliner before it crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsular killing all 224 people on board, questions are being asked as to the flight worthiness of the aircraft .

Some have pointed to a 2001 incident, when the Airbus 321’s tail section struck the tarmac on landing causing a possible structural weakness.

Natalya Trukhacheva, wife of co-pilot says her husband had his concerns:

“ He (her husband Sergey) complained before the flight that the technical condition of the aircraft left much to be desired (…) I believe he would have made every effort to try to control the plane. If there was any chance, he would have landed it.”

Detailed flight data released by FlightRadar24, a flight tracking website, showed the plane sharply gaining altitude and dropping in its last moments, a pattern some experts have said would be consistent with losing the tail.

But investigators are still waiting for the plane’s flight data recorders to finish being analysed. The fact that the pilot made no distress call implies whatever happened was sudden. It’s also been suggested that due to the scattering of the plane’s wreckage over a wide area it may have broken up mid-air and at a high altitude.

Meanwhile relatives of those who died have been sent to a mortuary in Russia for the painful task of identifying loved ones .

The remains of the last 28 passengers have now arrived.

As a shocked nation continues to grieve a helpline offering psychological support for families and friends has already received around 3,000 calls.
