“The size of the problem suggests that restructurings will be needed, for example, in the periphery of Europe, far beyond anything discussed in public to this point,” said the paper, by Harvard professors Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff.
The paper said policy elites in the West are still clinging to the illusion that rich countries are different from poorer regions and can therefore chip away at their debts with a blend of austerity cuts, growth, and tinkering (“forbearance”).

NSA AND FACEBOOK WORK TOGETHER
Lawyer at the European Court of Justice advises users to close down their Facebook accounts


A lawyer for the European Commission told an EU judge on Tuesday (24 March) he should close his Facebook page if he wants to stop the US snooping on him, in what amounts to an admission that Safe Harbour, an EU-US data protection pact, doesn’t work.
“You might consider closing your Facebook account, if you have one,” European Commission attorney Bernhard Schima told attorney-general Yves Bot at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

He noted that so long as talks with the Americans are on-going, then the power of national data protection authorities to possibly suspend data transfers in individual cases is limited.

He also said that the Brussels executive is unable to guarantee “adequate” safeguards are respected.

It could be a split decision if the Rothschilds’ spat isn’t resolved

I gather I am not alone in finding amusing the idea of the Swiss branch of the Rothschild banking dynasty, founded by Mayer Amschel, preparing to take the French branch to court over the use of the family name.

The Financial Times says Edmond de Rothschild Group, a Swiss-French private bank, is preparing a “cease and desist” order against French financial adviser Rothschild & Cie, an offshoot of Paris-Orleans.

The former doesn’t like the way the latter calls itself “parent of the Rothschild group”.

No doubt one side will claim its case is totally valid and the other will describe it as frivolous and lacking merit. Only the lawyers will win.

What is required, of course, is the judgment of Solomon. As King of Israel, he had to rule between two women claiming to be the mother of the same baby.

He ordered the babe should be cleaved in half. The liar agreed but the real mother preserved her offspring’s life by saying the pretender could take it.

The judge, if the case comes to court, should offer the choice of the name Roths or Child to be decided on the flip of a coin.

" Ed Miliband’s hopes of become Britain’s next Prime Minister suffered a serious setback today as a new poll suggested Labour is facing political annihilation at the hands of the SNP in its Scottish heartlands.

The survey, by Ipsos Mori, found Labour is currently polling at just 23 per cent in Scotland which, if replicated in May, would see the party lose all but four of the 41 MPs it currently has north of the border."

In the front window of Dunoon’s Scottish National Party campaign base, alongside posters and canvassing information for the local SNP candidate, Brendan O’Hara, they’re displaying for sale a new pamphlet which describes in detail how MI5 and John McTernan, chief of staff to Jim Murphy, the Scottish Labour leader, “rigged” last year’s independence referendum by creating thousands of fake No ballot papers.
The authors, nationalist activists from Argyll, first suspected the existence of the “McTernan Plan”, as they call it, on the night of the count. Their “extensive canvass returns” had left them “confident of success” in the area, but when the postal vote came in they were “astounded” to discover it was 70-30 against independence. What’s more, the postal voter turnout in Argyll was 96.4 per cent. “We had never before heard of such a high return in any democratic election,” they said.
The activists’ suspicions hardened when they learned that Mr McTernan, then a Labour commentator, had appeared on TV four days before the referendum saying that “postal votes are running very strongly towards No.”

That’s right – everything you’ve ever searched for while you’ve been logged in is now available for you to look at and do with as you will.

The ability to download searches is a useful addition to Google’s “Takeout policy”, which intends to make it easier for users to obtain their data. But realise this, that your history will probably contain lots of embarrassing results, and searches that you don’t want to let out into the public domain…

I also noticed this a few days ago. I deleted every item contained in my history. Of course I realize that in doing so I only deleted my access to the information-- I'm sure Google still retains the full record.

It was amazing, the amount of stuff in there, although the record only went back as far as 2007, if I remember correctly. Then, beginning about 2013, I didn't have more than a dozen items. That was around the time I started using StartPage.com for all my searches, instead of Google. StartPage acts as a proxy-- it does anonymous searches using Google, and feeds them back to you, all without keeping a log.

James Palumbo: There will be a riot when we wake up to economic reality

The 2015 Election, a bizarre exercise in reality avoidance and electoral bribery tempered by an existential Scottish threat, could have another consequence: riots on the streets of London.

Reality avoidance first. Greece is bankrupt and looks likely to limp out of the eurozone. Italy is an economic basket case. France isn’t far behind. Respected economists think there’s a good chance that the euro will implode. Result? A depression across Europe which would devastate our economy.

How do our leaders plan to deal with this real and present danger? They’re not telling us. Worse, there’s no mention of the true scale of our debts. Politicians talk about the deficit and national debt — around five and 80 per cent of GDP respectively. Add in unfunded pensions, off-balance-sheet and other debts and this soars to about 600 per cent of GDP.

Rather than debating these serious issues, the parties focus on the fractional differences between their spending plans. These are inconsequential within the overall scheme of things and don’t add up anyway, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

But the incendiary spark is more likely to be produced by a crisis in Europe, which will spill into and infect our economy. This may prove to be the final rupture of a political system based on reality-avoidance and electoral bribes.

The campaign so far has already exposed fundamental flaws in our current form of democracy. But however wedded we remain to the system, we cannot escape the fact that the numbers no longer add up.

It may take weeks, months or even years. But when we’re forced to grasp the severity of the situation and suffer the consequences, what will happen? I predict a riot.

UK GOVERNMENT CHANGES LAW TO PROTECT NSA/GCHQ ( SAME CONTROLLERS !! )

The Government has surreptitiously rewritten anti-hacking laws so that GCHQ and other law enforcement agencies can avoid criminal prosecution

Details of the alteration emerged at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal - which is currently hearing a challenge to the legality of computer-hacking by the country's intelligence agencies.

The Government changed the Computer Misuse Act (CMA) two months ago to give intelligence agencies more protection - via a little-known addition to the Serious Crime Bill.

The law was brought in just weeks after the Government faced a legal challenge that GCHQ had broken the law under the CMA by hacking computers to gather intelligence.
